We're dreaming of a safe Christmas

Since Christmas now starts before the leaves turn brown, the long build up seems to have the opposite effect - the whole thing arrives faster than you expect.  For all of you who work with children and their parents, the approach of Christmas is even more significant, you are on the festive front line. Like Father Christmas and his elves, you are responsible for maintaining the seasonal spirit and coping with the mounting frenzy of excitement that fires up children, and their parents, at this time of the year. But I’m sure you wouldn’t want to have it any other way. And amid the card-making sessions, the visits from Santa and the carol-singing, it’s a good time to take stock of the year. 

It has been a mixed year for everyone working with children. But we are all making progress towards a safer environment. It’s certainly been a good year in Bitrex’s particular area of home safety. The dangers from laundry detergent liquid-tabs became firmly part of the media agenda. Few modern inventions have been as popular with customers as these neat little tabs - so much more convenient than big boxes. But so appealing to small fingers and mouths. 

But the industry has taken action. Manufactures and retailers have added Bitrex to big name brands to provide the last line of defence. Since most of the accidents involving liquid-tabs take place when they are in use, safer storage and closures will never be the complete answer. Industry bodies have taken notice too and there has been a Europe wide acknowledgement of the child safety issues. It shows what things can change and the industry will respond quickly and positively to customer concerns. 

What made a big difference were the signatures that you have helped to collect in the Battle for Bitrex petitions - clear proof that parents want safer products. But just as important in highlighting the dangers from common household products has been the overwhelming number of Bitrex Taste Tests that were organised this year. We estimate that over 100,000 people have taken the Test. And the resulting faces shared on social media have done even more to raise awareness of the role of Bitrex in keeping children safe.

We will keep working with the industry bodies, with manufacturers, retailers, with CAPT and with you, to do whatever we can to help make products safer. 

This is the end of my first year at Bitrex. It hasn’t been dull! But it’s been rewarding too and that has been due the fantastic people I’ve met all over the country, all committed to a safer world for our children. So thank you and have a fabulous festive season and a great 2015.
