Do a little, change a lot!
How do you make things happen? How do you change the world, even just a little bit? I know, I know, none of us feel very powerful in the big scale of things. There’s a fed-upness about politics and about institutions. But let me tell you a quick story that might change your mind.
Last week was Child Safety Week. It’s been running for ages, and Bitrex have been sponsoring it for almost as long. It is, without question, one of the biggest community based events in the country. Maybe only the huge events, Children in Need, Sports-Aid, can point to more events happening in towns, villages and neighbourhoods up and down the country.
Hundreds of events, all in the same week. People like you and me, mums, dads, carers, grans, grandads, aunties, uncles, the neighbour next door who looks after the kids after school on Thursdays, all of them gathering together to eat a little cake, drink some tea, maybe a little homemade fruit cordial. They’ll have a bit of a laugh, the kids will get some balloons to take home – if they last that long, and everyone will learn a little bit more about keeping children safe.
That’s the point of the week, highlighting child safety. It changes the world a tiny bit for each family, a bit more knowledge, not learned from someone with a blackboard and pointy stick, but with a group of friends and neighbours having a hoot.
But multiply that up a bit and it looks much bigger. Take the Bitrex Taste Test - getting a bunch of adults in a room and torturing their taste buds by showing them just what the bitterest substance in the world tastes like. We sent out 75,000 Taste Tests, that’s a lot of people who now know a bit more about keeping children safe.
