Why so bitter?

31,500 children were sent to hospital with suspected poisoning in 2002 (last available A&E statistics), of which 26,000 were under 5 years of age. (See CAPT Factsheet). 25% of all telephone enquiries to the National Poison Information Service (NPIS) were in relation to young children and infants, the majority of which involved exposure to household products, cosmetics or pesticides. Why take the risk on accidental poisoning?

Bitrex, the brand name for denatonium benzoate, is officially the world's most bitter substance according to the 1982 Guinness Book of Records.

Why not look for the Bitrex logo the next time you are out grocery shopping. Retailers are adding Bitrex to their household ranges to help prevent your child from accidentally swallowing them. Bitrex is inert and odourless, meaning it doesn't affect the product performance other than making it exceptionally bitter.

If you don't see the logo on the product, why not contact the retailer's customer services department and demand it be added!
